Company History – Pálmar Harðarson, CEO of Þingvangur

“I have worked in this field almost my entire life,” says Pálmar Harðarson, CEO. “I started young in construction with my father, Hörður Jónsson. Both my grandfather and great-grandfather also built numerous houses here in the capital. When I drive around the capital area and the countryside, I can point to many buildings that my family has been involved in.”

The years following the financial crash were challenging for the entire construction industry, but the beginning of Þingvangur’s growth can be traced to when the company purchased the old Technical College in Akureyri, renovated the building, and transformed it into a stylish Icelandair hotel.

In recent years, Þingvangur has participated in numerous ambitious projects in prominent locations, such as Lýsisreitur, Hljómalindarreitur, and Brynjureitur.

“After regaining momentum, our growth has been rapid, and many large projects are currently underway. Our operations are not limited to the capital area, as we have completed major projects across the country, including hotels in Akureyri and Höfn in Hornafjörður, a volcano center in Hvolsvöllur, eleven year-round houses in Kjarnaskógur, a café at Hellnar on Snæfellsnes, and one of the largest cattle farms in Iceland at Sandhóll in Meðalland, Skaftárhreppur,” says Pálmar.

Machinery Division and Import Operations

Þingvangur has long imported its own materials from reliable suppliers worldwide. This ensures quality and availability while also reducing costs for all parties involved. The company also operates its own machinery and electrical divisions.

Quality System

All operations at Þingvangur follow an internal quality system that defines numerous aspects of the company’s procedures, including workflows, data storage, and communication with public authorities.

This ensures consistency and continuity in operations. Over time, accumulated experience and knowledge lead to increasingly improved project execution. Þingvangur’s quality system is certified by Frumherji, which also conducts audits every two years.

The company is also in the process of implementing the Ajour quality system for internal monitoring.

Tender Projects

Þingvangur began participating in tender projects in 2018. Notable examples include a service facility in Örfirisey for the City of Reykjavík, extensive renovations at Korputorg, where ÍSAM plans to relocate operations including Frón Biscuit Factory and Myllan, as well as interior redevelopment for Vodafone’s specialized facilities on Suðurlandsbraut.

Laugarnes Development / Köllunarklettur – Scale of Two Smáralind Malls

One of the most exciting projects undertaken by Þingvangur is the Laugarnes development area below Kleppsvegur—a large-scale development zone with a construction volume comparable to two Smáralind shopping malls.
